See How the Newest 2019 Ram Pickup Matches up to Chevy's Silverado 1500

If you're thinking about getting a new pickup truck, you're well aware that there are a number of options available. Two of the more popular choices received fairly significant updates for the 2019 model year, which makes them even more compelling considerations than usual. We're talking about our all-new 2019 Ram 1500, of course, as well as the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. We thought it would be a good idea to see how these two new models fare when placed in a head-to-head assessment of each truck's merits. Read on to see the results.

Price

We compared base, two-wheel drive-equipped versions of each pickup. When you compare starting Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices, the Ram 1500 comes in several thousands of dollars lower than the Silverado 1500. Those are significant savings that you can either put towards another household need, or towards upgrading your Ram1500 to an even more-luxuriously appointed trim level.

Those savings continue over your entire ownership period, too. While each comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic limited new vehicle warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile drivetrain warranty, and 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance program, the Ram 1500 provides owners with a longer corrosion protection plan -- at no extra charge.

Performance

Both trucks boast powerful engines, but this round clearly goes to the all-new Ram 1500. It comes with a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine that boasts new eTorque technology, making 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque -- including up to 90 pound-feet of supplemental torque that's delivered when you need it most. The Silverado comes with a 4.3-liter V6 engine that doesn't have the added benefit provided by an eTorque system.

At the top end of each truck's engine lineup, the Ram offers a 5.7-liter V8 HEMI® engine that generates 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the Silverado's 5.3-liter V8 EcoTec3 engine tops out at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque.

The Ram also comes with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission that provides smoother gear changes than the Silverado 1500's six-speed automatic can manage. Finally, the Ram 1500 offers owners best-in-class V6 engine towing capability of up to 12,750 pounds, which tops the Silverado's max towing capacity.

Features

You'll find the amenities you'd expect in each base pickup, such as cruise control, power steering, power windows, remote keyless entry, a tilt steering wheel, and a folding rear seat. The Ram 1500 also includes push-button start, MP3 player, and auxiliary audio input, while the Silverado does not offer those features for the base 1500.

The Ram 1500 can be equipped with class-exclusive features that make your job much easier, such as Active Level™ Four-Corner Air Suspension that keeps loads level in all road conditions, and the Rambox® Cargo Management System that provides a secure, lit, lockable place to store important tools and supplies. The Silverado 1500 doesn't offer comparable features that can be added.

Safety

Both pickups are still awaiting testing from safety organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, each features multiple driver and passenger airbags, daytime running lights, traction control, and electronic stability control.

The Ram 1500 goes beyond these basics, though, including safety and driver-assistance features that the Silverado either doesn't offer or makes available as expensive options. These standard Ram 1500 features include child safety locks, brake assist, a backup camera, and wireless cell phone connectivity.
